LANGUAGE ACTIVITY - Properties of Materials - Experiment #1
Watch the science video, "Wood, Water and Properties. See link below.
After watching, you will conduct an experiment by writing with a variety of tools on a variety of materials. You will need 3 different writing tools (chalk, marker, crayon) and 5 different materials (cloth, tin foil, plastic, paper and paper towel). If you don't have any of the writing tools or materials listed you can just substitute with something else. For example, if you do not have chalk then use a pencil instead. An example recording chart is below. If you are able to draw on the material with your writing tool then you make a checkmark in the box. If it is difficult to write on the material and see what you wrote, make an x on your chart.

All About Mom
Watch the video story of "Twas the Night Before Mother's Day".
Make a special heart ornament and card for mom. See photo below. Use craft paper to create the card for mom with the message, "Love you to pieces". The front cover of the card will have a heart cut out (you may need to ask dad for some help). Using a piece of cardboard as the base for your ornament, create the same size heart as the cut out on the front of your card. The cardboard ornament can be decorated with pieces of different materials. Ideas could include pieces of coloured paper, coloured beads, stickers, pieces of fabric. Tie a string or ribbon to the back of the heart ornament and tape it into the middle of the card so that you can see it through the heart cut out on the front.
Inside your card you can add a coupon booklet of special things for mom, like in the story "Twas the Night Before Mother's Day." Below is a document that you can print out with some ideas for coupons or you can make your own.
Don't forget to tell Mommy how much you love her.

MATH ACTIVITY - Measuring Family Members
Using playing cards, you will measure how tall your family members are. Estimate how many cards each person is before measuring. To measure, have your family member lie down on the floor on their back with their hands tucked in close to their body. Place your elbow against the bottom of their foot and move your hand down to touch the ground. This will help you create the imaginary measuring line to place your first card. See picture below. This helps us keep the cards in a straight line as we place them beside the person. As you lay the cards down they need to be touching, no spaces in between. Have FUN!

LANGUAGE ACTIVITY - NOUN GAME
This game can be played with your family.
A noun is a word that names a person, place or thing. Each player thinks of a noun and words to describe it. For example, the noun sun can be described as hot, yellow, large. Once everyone has a noun and words to describe it the game can begin. One at a time, a player shares one of their describing words until the noun is guessed. The game continues until all the nouns have been guessed.

Who is in the photo?
What are they doing?
When is this happening? (Can you tell the time of day or the season?)
Where are the people?

Butterfly Building Challenge
Design a butterfly using recycled material. Write a joke or a positive message on a recipe card or piece of paper. Attach it to the butterfly. Go for a walk and attach your butterfly to a neighbourhood tree or along a footpath to bring joy to others out for a walk. If you prefer to stay close to home, hang it in your backyard, front porch or in a window. See photo posted below.
We love Todd Parr
One of our favourite authors this year is Todd Parr. The students love his silly and colourful illustrations. His illustrations have inspired many budding artists. Below I have posted a few stories for you to enjoy. You can access his stories and activities on his website. https://www.toddparr.com
Math Games - online learning support
1. Have your child play this matching game to build number fluency. Children can choose the challenge that is right for them, by choosing the difficulty level and the type of number cards used (pictures, dots, numbers). Have fun!

Learning About Lifecycles
Telling Time and Understanding Canadian Coins
We have been learning about telling time to the hour and half hour on analog and digital clocks. Some more practice is needed with time to the half hour. The children have brought home clocks that they made to practice.
We are learning to identify Canadian coins by symbol, by name and by value. We are learning to combine coins to create specific values (e.g., How many ways can you show 10 cents, 12 cents or 25 cents?)
Below are some videos to support our learning.

Math Link
In math, we are exploring the measuring of time: a year is 12 months, a season is 3 months, a month is 4 weeks and a week is 7 days. Below are some stories and songs that are supporting our learning.
Remembrance Day Learning
Orange Shirt Day - September 30
Orange Shirt Day, is a day on which we commemorate the thousands of First Nations, Métis and Inuit children who were removed from their homes at this time of the year and forced to attend residential schools. The Ottawa-Carleton District School Board is committed to providing a safe and welcoming environment for all students and staff. www.orangeshirtday.org.
Today we read the story Shin Chi's Canoe, posted below. The children created their own designs for orange t-shirts and we continued to discuss the rights of children. During a brainstorming session the children came up with these ideas.

Math Support - Patterning and Sorting
Our first unit in math has the children sorting objects by looking at characteristics to tell how objects are the same and or different. They are also investigating repeating patterns. A pattern can be made by looking at characteristics such as colour, shape, size, position. Below are a few games that will help to consolidate their learning.

Thinking Thoughts and Feeling Feelings
This week we have been learning about the parts of the body that help us to think thoughts, the brain, and feel feelings, the heart. We can't see what another person is thinking. We don't see their thoughts but we can see from their face and body language how they might be feeling. Below is a song that we are learning in class.

Chrysanthemum - Our first read aloud story
On the first day of school I shared the story Chrysanthemum, by Kevin Henkes, with the class. It is a great story for the start of school, about a young mouse on her first day of school. Chrysanthemum experiences many different feelings throughout the book, which acted a a springboard for a discussion on how we were feeling. Some of the responses from students were happy, sad, excited, and scared. The young mouse learns an important lesson about her unusual name...she finds out that her name is absolutely perfect.
